This book presents 12 women, all born before the twentieth century, who made a difference in the Prairie State. Mary Mother Jones Harris and Myra Bradwell championed better working conditions and bravely paved the way for labor regulation. Anna Elizabeth Slough journeyed to Illinois when it was considered part of the untamed Far West and later ran her own hotel in Peoria. Jane Addams, the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize, spent her entire adult life educating and caring for Chicago`s poor and downtrodden. The photographs by Candace McCormick Reed are considered the best historical record of life in early Illinois.
